- Cherkassov, A. A. 1867. Notes of Siberian Hunter naturalist. (Zapiski
okhotnika-naturalist, in russisch) Later edition, 1962. Academy of sciences
of the USSR, Moskau, 504 pp. This book is entirely about hunting and way of
life in east siberia. Cherkassov writes many times and in great details
about dogs describing their way of life and hunting with natives of Siberia
and russian frontiersmen. At that time, Laikas still loved as mongrels, or
pariah dogs of natives and they were not considered as beautiful dogs at
all. Thus, Cherkassov writes " Just look how zgly they are! With bushy
tails, prick ears and pointed muzzles !?. Russian aristocrats of that time
were fascinated by their Botzois of European breeds, such Pointers, Setters
and scent Hounds.Language of this book is amazinglyy colorful, rich and
archaic. It is among best nostalgic readings for a russian nature lover.
